Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP)

Stay Independent with the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP)

The Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) is an Australian Government initiative that provides entry-level support for older people who need help with everyday tasks to remain living independently and safely at home. CHSP focuses on working with you, not doing things for you, so you can maintain your independence and wellbeing.

Why is CHSP Important?

Most people want to stay at home for as long as possible as they age. CHSP helps make this possible by:

  • Supporting independence and safety at home
  • Delaying or avoiding high-level care such as residential aged care
  • Keeping people socially active and connected to their community

Who is Eligible?

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are 65 years or older (or 50 years or older if you are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander)
  • Live at home and need help with everyday tasks
  • In some cases, are 50+ and homeless or at risk of homelessness

Eligibility is assessed through My Aged Care. From 1 November 2025, all CHSP clients must be registered with My Aged Care and have an assessment under the new Aged Care Act 2024.
